Mr. Şenver where did you start you career?
A (1)
I started my career in Arthur Andersen Istanbul and London offices. I worked for 11 years in Arthur Andersen. So, I have tremendous experience as external auditor. Initially it was large manufacturing companies but then I started auditing banks and became an expert in this field. I even worked for Central Bank of Turkey to develop an "Off Site Bank Surveillance System" and an "Early Warning System for Banks". I was also in charge of developing a "Standard Chart of Accounts" for the Turkish Banking system.

Why did you not become a partner in Arthur Andersen?
A (2)
Well I almost did. I left Arthur Andersen when I was ready to be promoted as a partner. Just as promotion time approached, I got a job offer as Assistant General Manager of a bank. I believe at the time it was the correct decision to take the job and move on to and conquer new areas of business. After 3 years working as Assistant General Manager I was promoted as a CEO Chief Executive Officer of a big Commercial Bank in Turkey. I also served as the Chairman of the Board of an investment bank. I also served as a Board Member in 10 other companies.

You are famous in the business world in Turkey as "master banker". Why do you think people call you that? Can you give examples of things you did that made you deserve this reputation?

People call me "master banker" because I introduced many new products and services to the Turkish banking system. In the early years, when retail banking was in its infant stage, I introduced the first photograph credit card. It's a card with your picture on it. It was such a new concept for the worldwide banking system that it was not just the first in Turkey, it was actually the first in the world. Then I introduced soccer club ATM cards, again a first in the world. In Turkey, the first call center service, the first mortgage loan product, the first digital lottery system, the first world currency deposit account and many other new products. I earned my reputation by developing and innovating and successfully implementing new and useful banking products and services.

Q (4) Where does Ethics come into the picture? Because we are told that you are also called the "ethics man" in Turkey as well.
A (4)
I established the first Turkish "Ethics Center Association". I am the Honorary Founding Chairman of the organization. I experienced that in every aspect of life, this includes business life, acting ethically always wins in the long run. I always try to make people realize that ethics is not just a set of rules that you can ignore when things get tricky.
Not always bad people do wrong things in business. Many times, good people do bad things. Wrong behavior results in a loss to the individual, the company and the society. In order not to collectively lose, good people in organizations should know how to act ethically. I devote most of my time to ethics training.
I have a tendency to always show the right path; and this trip down the right path is not for people with weak characters. Unfortunately, the number of powerful individuals who actively work for promotion and education of ethical values is not as much as we'd like it to be. So, I guess people simply remember me only when they hear about ethics. But I'm sure this will change in time. I'd rather simply be called the first of many men who are "ethics men".

How did you start lecturing in universities? Teaching sounds mighty hard to do when you have so many eggs in your basket.

I started lecturing in year 1984. I was invited by the Bosporus University to give a lecture on auditing. When I became the CEO of a big commercial bank I was invited by another university to lecture on various financial topics. In years invitations came and I felt obliged to accept them and I lectured in some 7 different universities teaching Banking, Finance, Accounting and Business Ethics courses. At present I am lecturing in 3 different universities in Istanbul. I always felt that I needed to share my knowledge with the next generation. That's why even when I actively worked as CEO, I always created time to teach and transfer my knowledge. Now I realize that it was the correct decision to give importance to teaching the next generation.

In addition to your business life and teaching, are there any other organizations that you took part in and like to mention?
A (6)
Yes, I served for many years in TUSİAD Turkish Business & Industry Association. Worked in Parliament Committee and contributed in the development of first TUSIAD Business Code of Ethics. I became the Chairman of TABA-AmCham Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and acted as Chairman for six years. I also became a member of the Executive Committee of ECACC European Council of American Chambers of Commerce and served as the Treasurer of ECACC. I also established the "Book for Everyone" Foundation. I am acting as the founding Chairman of "Boos for Everyone" Foundation.
