World is changing.
Business life is also changing.
The speed of change during the last 50 years is enormous.
The pace of technological change is sweeping boldly across business. It is breathtaking.

"Leadership"
was the first concern of business.
Then, "Ethics" became important and business began talking about "Ethical Leadership".
 
Today, "Digital Technology" surrounded our business life.

Now, business is talking about how to implement "Ethical Leadership in Digital Era".
 
Very soon we will be talking about "Ethical Leadership in Post Digital Era"
 

We all hope that new Digital Era will ensure prosperity for all of us.

The leader has a key role and the leading position in the organization. Therefore, their moral qualities will have a great influence on the organization.

Ethical leadership always contains moral standards, humility and leniency.

The frankness, sincerity and commitments to the people are standards of morality and civilization.

If leaders are dishonest the employees will see their leaders unreliable and their respect for leaders will be diminished.

Honesty
is necessary to become a good leader.

About $1.25 trillion spent on digital transformation globally in 2019, and that number will skyrocket to ($1.97) 2 trillion in global spending on digital transformation of businesses in 2022.
 
Enterprises are at a crucial new turning point.

We will need a new set of ethical rules to be successful.
 
Digital development is taking us from the digital age towards a new "Post-Digital Era".
 
Becoming digital will no longer be a differentiation advantage for companies in future.
 
In the Post-Digital world, differentiation will come from applying digital in powerful new ethical ways.

In Digital Era leaders should be able to build up digital trust for their organization.

They have to think about digital trust as a brand value and market differentiator.

Leaders will face difficulty in making decisions that involve balancing revenue opportunities against brand trust, especially when other market participants may not be behaving in responsible ways.

Building trust
with customers, employees, shareholders, stakeholders, business partners and community through a responsible approach to technology will be the top priority for all C-suite executives (CEO, CFO, CTO etc).

An Ethical Leader in Digital Era should respond to the following issues:
 
1) Build a culture of responsibility
 by training employees on industry-leading practices, such as integrating principles of fairness, ethics, and safety though the product or service life cycle, and encouraging desirable behaviors through strong support from the top.

2) Integrate ethics in the organization's strategy
 by instituting an Ethics Board and appointing a Chief Ethics Officer that works closely with business units and oversees transformation efforts to guide use of technologies in ethical ways.

3) Collaborate with industry stakeholders
 to build ethical frameworks for the use of emerging technologies. It will not be sufficient for an organization to be ethical in the digital era.

All players
in the digital era should collectively exercise ethical values in order to create an ethical digital environment.

Leaders in the digital era must focus on coaching the adjacent leaders with sufficient virtue, promote the spirit of service, listen and mobilize the voluntary participation of employees, exploit and share information, thereby build and create a vision for the organization.

Technology is reaching into complex areas, like gene editing and surveillance capitalism, that raise new ethical questions for society.

Ethical Leadership will not depend only on how fast your company can continue the journey to master

Artificial Intelligence,

Extended Reality,

Distributed Ledger Technology,

Quantum Computing

Big Data

Smart Cities

E-Commerce

Robotics

3D Printing

Augmented Reality

Cloud Computing

Internet of Things

and more.

Ethical Leadership will depend on how well and how ethical you can use these technologies.

Leaders should know how to use digital facilities for the good of the shareholders, stakeholders and the community.

Ethical leadership in the digital era means creating a better society, bringing freedom and equality for all.

Therefore, leaders moral qualities will have a great influence on the organization.

The digital age opens a new era, especially in terms of the access to information.

People can easily involve in monitoring the activities of public agencies. However, many other concerns also arise.

The reliability of data becomes an important issue.

The information can easily be copied, modified but not easily verified.

The data recovery becomes difficult or almost impossible.

Information can be easily stolen and used with ill-will.

Negative information
shared on social networks can spread quickly due to loosen control.

Moreover, the smart devices were created not for the purposes of peace and ethics, but for profit.

The manufacturer is willing to sacrifice the interests of majorities just to protect the interests of minority.

Leaders need to address harmoniously the relationship between growth and sustainable development.

Pay attention to the lives of all stakeholders, take equality and social responsibility as a driving force for leadership.

Technology crimes will also increase in future.

To protect and retain customers, leaders of technology companies should cooperate with legal and supervisory authorities to prevent criminal acts.

If they don't cooperate they may enforce the digital crimes and unethical use of the digital era.

Ethical leadership in the digital era necessitates more attention on the following issues:

Information
sharing,
Accountability,
Transparency,
Vision creation,
Service spirit, and
Respect for human dignity.

Therefore, moral leadership in a digital era is always faced with significant challenges from the external environment.

Leaders must create stability, balance, flexibility to promote organization's development.

All leaders will need to adjust their company's education and training systems to deliver the skills required in the digital economy.

Ethical leadership in the digital era promotes the controlling mechanism and balances the power between leaders and people.

People can examine and monitor the effectiveness of leadership of all organizations, agencies, and the government better than before.

Therefore, each leader should strongly be aware of building relationships with the people.

Ethical leadership in the digital era are not about making compliments about what is right or wrong, but about choosing the right thing to do and doing what people demand.

In digital and post -digital era leaders should incorporate ethics and purpose into their leadership styles and demonstrate clear company goals to get their employees behind them.

Leaders have to overcome the challenge of combining purpose with profits and create a new type of value driven business model with a vision of more long-term and future-oriented success.

Ethical leaders in the digital era must minimize the distance to their employees and create mental and emotional closeness by talking personally and transparently.

Leaders in the digital era should also create an interactive communication environment by setting the framework for two-way conversations and include employees directly in achieving company goals.

There were unethical leaders yesterday.

There are unethical leaders today.

And there will be unethical leaders in future.
 
Our concern should be how we can avoid good people behaving unethically.

This will be the new challenge.
 
In future, Classical Leadership style will disappear.

Female leadership was more ethical than male leadership in business life before.

This will be true also in Digital and Post-Digital Era.

We need more female leaders to dominate the ethical business life.
 
I invite all the Chief Executives to take their company's digital transformation journey to the next level by applying new technologies, investing in their talent and organization, to build post-digital skillsets, and strengthening trust-based ethical relationships for greater success.
