) What will be the Major Effects of Digital
Transformation in Education?


I remember a good saying which says, "if you make a 1 year plan, plant rice on your farm, if you make 10 year plan, plant trees on your farm, if you make a plan for 100 years invest in educating your children.

I have been teaching banking, finance and business ethics in universities for many years. We are now in a transition period in education sector. One age is closing and a new age is opening. The new age may be called "Edu-Digitalisation".

Digital Transformation became a necessity in education.

If it were not for Covid we will still be working on digitalization projects in the education sector.

Covid speeded up the digital transformation in education.

Some faculty members think that digital education cannot be as effective as face-to-face education.

This may be true if digital education is made as a copy and paste of face-to-face education.

If faculty members try to use digital platforms as if they are making face to face education, students may not fully benefit from such implementations.

Digital environment has different tools and capabilities.

At present, educators are trying to learn the digital environment and develop their skills in using the new facilities of the technology.

Digital education is not sitting in front of a computer and lecturing to students using zoom, adobe connect or other video platforms. It is completely a new way of education.

I want to summarize the Major Effects of Digital Transformation in Education under 5 headings:

 
First Effect1

It will Improve Student Experience

At present students are struggling to get most out of digital education. Students in the universities are more capable in using the digital technology that the faculty members. They are able to upgrade their learning skills very quickly. In future, students will need less lecturing from the faculty and they will develop more experience in searching, analyzing, evaluating and learning from the digital environment.

 
Second Effect2

It will Meet the Changing Students Needs

Student needs are changing continuously with a very high speed. Changes can easily be made on a digital platform to cope up with the student expectations. Digital transformation in education will make the changes to happen more easily and quickly.

Third Effect3

It will Generate Efficiency

Digital Transformation in Education will increase the efficiency of students, faculty, staff and the universities. Efficiency may be obtained by increasing the quality of service, decreasing the cost of education and giving service to more students without any restriction of physical facilities.

Fourth Effect4

It will Positively Effect Growth and Sustainability
61%

At present growth is not an easy task for a university. It takes a lot of time. Many years needed to grow the students, faculty and staff of a university. Digitalization will make growth easier for universities.


Fifth Effect5

It will Improve the attractiveness of the University

In future students will be judging the quality of a university by its digital performance. Quality of faculty and the education content will always be important for good universities. But if, this is not coupled with effective use of technology, quality in other areas cannot be the only selling tool for a university.

Good quality of faculty will not shine if they are not polished with effective use of digital technology.

Digital Transformation will Enhance Competitiveness in Higher Education:


There will be tight competition among universities in future.

University campus and campus facilities will not be as important as before.

Universities with unfavorable physical conditions may benefit more from digitalization.

Use of digital technology effectively to meet the needs of students will become an important competitive advantage

Digital Transformation will necessitate Control of Costs in Higher Education:

In future more attention will be needed to justify the tuition fees of universities.

Therefore Cost/Benefit ratio in universities will become more important.

After digital transformation many expensive universities will be forced to reduce their tuition fees.

To compensate the decrease in university revenues they have either to reduce their costs or increase the number of students registering.

Due to competition, to increase the number students may not be easy.

Therefore controlling and reducing costs in universities will become more important than before.

Digital Transformation will Improve User Experience in Higher Education:

Studies show that, on average, 4 out of ten students access at least two digital devices during a regular day at school.

Therefore, it has become a necessity for universities to resort to upgrading websites so that they become more friendly with students, and they can obtain the necessary information from any smart device and at any time.

Digital Transformation will Increase Agility in Higher Education:


The process of digital transformation involves more than just software.

It is about identifying the interests and needs of students, faculty, staff and other institutions and making changes to meet the needs of these stakeholders.

The use of technology is an agile and flexible way of facing the high-level demands of students, faculty, and staff.

Continuous improvement of user experience will be generated by the innovative use of technology in order to keep students, staff and faculty, productive and satisfied.

To conclude, in order to be successful in future, all institutions need to implement an effective digital transformation in educational services like the banking sector which already invested in financial digital technology and will continue to invest in future.

Governments, private sector, universities and other educational institutions should speed up the investments made to digital education.

Creating a strong digital education is necessary to educate the new young generation for a better economy in future.
